Currently August 2014

I am linking up with the great Farley at Oh Boy 4th Grade.
August arrived quickly and I needed this little opportunity to think and read everyone's delightful posts.
This will be short(er) since I need to get moving on my TO-DO list.
Today, we are heading out to celebrate my father-in-law's 70th birthday. It will be nice to get together with family and celebrate him. You know though, that teacher/mother in me, is thinking about all of the things I still need to do in order to be ready for the first day of school. {Breathe}
I think my list is pretty self-explanatory, except my dog comment. So let me elaborate a little.

Bandit, our sweet, almost 2-years old Labrador Retriever has been slowly acclimating to life in a house with a family full of active boys. He is doing great with us yet struggles with strangers. He desperately wants to protect his territory and BARKS a lot.
In order to break him of this we have enlisted a trainer and are taking steps to get him use to being social. Making progress, and that is great.
So the other day my darling husband (who is spending the week before school starts home with the boys) took the boys and the dog to the park to play and relax. On the way home, almost in our driveway, the dog next door bolted out of his house and approached our dog and boys. He sniffed then suddenly attacked Bandit.
My kids were frightened and my husband was freaked out.
He bit him once, then let go and bit him again. This time he would not let go. Kids were screaming and crying and my husband was yelling. The dog wouldn't let go and his owner is still inside their house.
My husband forced their dog off and takes off running after the kids and our dog. They quickly try to get in the house and now the neighbor is out saying, "Are you ok?" You can fill in what my husband said.
They were scared and the neighbor's reaction was less than expected. They did not seem to think it was a big deal. I disagree as does my husband who had to force their dog to retreat then had to help the kids and Bandit recover.
Thank goodness my husband was there and it wasn't just my oldest, whose chore is to take the dog on walks.
I called animal control and they were supposed to come out to talk with my husband and the neighbor but they did not show up.
My husband talked to the neighbor and they are just in denial that it was a serious situation. It was and he has shown the tendency to bite strangers before, so we are really concerned.
Our dog is ok, no injury, except to his ego. We are still working with him on behaviors and have talked with our boys about safety. Sadly, we are not allowing them to play with the boy next door at their house ever, unless they get rid of Kujo!
Just another bump to learn from, right?
Well friends, I really need to get moving, that to-do list needs to be tackled a bit. Hope you are having a wonderful August!
Cheers-

Two for Tuesday & Currently July

Time is flying, July is already here! As I walked around some stores with my oldest yesterday I could tell that they are gearing up for Back to School, I am not ready! I am still not keen on returning to school in July, but since the big bosses never asked, I will have to accept reality. Time to make the most of my July days!
It is time for Currently with Farley at Oh Boy 4th Grade!
I like waking up early for one reason, it is the only time of the day that everyone is sleeping and the house is silent. That silence does not last long, but those moments help me start off on the right foot.
This summer, I have made a point of enjoying the little moments and brushing off the not so great ones. I appreciate that I have a job that let's me stay home with my growing kids for the summers. They keep saying how lucky they are that their mom is home, I think I am the lucky (although tired) one!
I have had some WEIRD, call the dream analyzer, dreams this summer. Why do school dreams have to infiltrate my REM? Ugh!
I am currently reading a book which includes alchemy, and one of the characters knows how to freeze time. If anyone knows the chemistry behind bringing a book character to life, let me know, I want him to slow the summer down!
I really wanted to work out every day this summer, and I do get up and out more than during the year, but I am not succeeding on my workouts. I do a great job on the workout, then my legs hurt so much I can barely walk for a day or two. That is not fun! I suppose I could try an easier workout, but that seems top defeat the purpose.
What are your plans for the 4th?
I am also linking up today for another installment of Two for Tuesday! Thank you to The Teaching Tribune for this great linky party. Check out the two-fer deals below and on their blog.
Place Value Practice Tasks Cards using Whole Numbers. There are 7 sets of cards focusing on the 12 skills under Numbers and Operations in Base Ten. They are a bargain for $1.50 today.
How about a banner to help break the ice and decorate at the beginning of the year?
My students loved making these at the beginning of the year, and reflected on what they wrote when I returned them at the end of the year. This banner was great for open house with parents, and made a colorful personalized display piece.

Happy Tuesday to you! Enjoy all of your summer moments!

June Currently

It is time for linking up with Oh' Boy 4th Grade with Farley for this month's edition of Currently. I have missed the last few months, but with it being summer, there is no excuse to miss this month's party!

My list is self-explanatory, but who am I to be short-winded? No, seriously, my teachers used to beg me to say less when I write, and old habits are hard to break!
The boys are occupied, the computer was free, so I seized the moment to post. Sticking to my plan to keep up with the blog this summer.
Another habit I have is sleeping a lot, but lately it seems that I am sleeping a lot. I have felt run down and am thankful not to be writing lesson plans. How do I keep up with everything during the school year? My body must really be making up for all of the lat nights and early hours now. Unfortunately it hasn't been great sleep, having lots of weird dreams and some are even school related. Obviously, I need to "Let it Go" and RELAX!
I have tons of doctors appointments to squeeze in over the summer for the kids, we had 1 check up last week, and a few more scheduled in June. I really need to call the dentist for the kids and myself, not my favorite activity. Also need to get in to some other less loved appointments, being a women, dare I say aging?, is tough! No point in putting it off any longer, I will call tomorrow!
I think I need to change things up, and painting is a great way to spice the house up. Now the tough part, choosing the palette.
With a family of 5 there is lots of clutter. I feel like I am always getting rid of things, yet there is always more in the way.
My bucket list is really simple, friends, taking care of myself, and getting away before it is time to head back. Summer time really flies.
Thanks for swinging by today!
